Making Implementation Happen. Bridging the Research to Practice Gap.

About Us:

The California Autism Professional Training and Information Network (CAPTAIN) is a cross agency network developed to support the understanding and use of evidence based practices (EBPs) for individuals affected by Autism across the state of California.

As part of CAPTAIN's ongoing quality assurance, CAPTAIN Cadre complete an annual survey about their activities. Based on the 2020-2021 survey, the majority of the 350 school-based CAPTAIN Cadre reported they met or exceeded expectations. Overall, CAPTAIN Cadre reported completing over 16,245 trainings to: Special Educators, General Education Teachers, Paraeducators, DIS Providers (SLPs, OTs, PTs, APE, etc.), NPA/NPS personnel, School Administrators and Parents/Caregivers. 451 LEAs (Local Education Agencies) received training and coaching services by CAPTAIN Cadre.

CAPTAIN Leadership Team:

The CAPTAIN Leadership Team is comprised of professionals from the California Special Education Local Plan Areas (SELPAs), CA Department of Education, University Centers for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDDs), California Universities, Regional Centers, Department of Developmental Services, Family Resource Center Network/Family Empowerment Centers and Diagnostic Centers. Our CAPTAIN Leadership participated as trainers in the National Professional Development Center for Autism statewide training project. As a part of the dissemination efforts of the NPDC-Autism, we have established CAPTAIN to support implementation of EBPs across our state.

CAPTAIN Cadre Members:

Cadre members are nominated by SELPAs, Regional Centers, Family Resource/Family Empowerment Centers and Institutes of Higher Education. They receive training through our annual CAPTAIN Summit so that they can provide local training, implementation coaching, cross agency collaboration, and dissemination of the EBPs at the local level. CAPTAIN Cadre members have access to the NPDC-Autism and CAPTAIN training materials and assist with the statewide distribution of the EBPs by providing support and training locally.
